ABOUT the AAHGS JDW DC CHAPTER
The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. – James Dent Walker District of Columbia Chapter is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study and research of history and genealogy. We strive to make outstanding contributions to the AAHGS mission that preserves African American history and genealogy through the sponsorship of quality chapter programs, activities, and services.
Although the JDW Chapter is based in Washington, DC, many of our members are not native to the DC area and our research undertakings are not restricted to local genealogy/history. Our interests are regional, national and international. Our activities range from scheduled to special and our projects are ongoing or sometimes one of kind. One of our primary goals is to assist members in discovering and documenting their histories.

Plan chapter programs and activities for the monthly meetings; recruit program speakers; be responsible for special projects relating to genealogy and history; and work/partner with other community organizations who share the Chapter’s goals and objectives.

Preserve and promote history and genealogy through chapter programs, activities, and services.
Social Media – Jacqueline Tillman-Lewis, and Brenda Kinsler
Develop, promote and utilize traditional media and social media venues that will allow people to create, share, or exchange information, ideas, and pictures/videos, etc. surrounding history and genealogy.
Membership is open to the general public. Membership dues for the AAHGS James Dent Walker DC Chapter are $10/yr. Membership in the National Society is a prerequisite for membership in the James Dent Walker DC Chapter. Individual membership dues for the National Society are $35/yr. The membership year of the Chapter is from January 1st to December 31st of each calendar year.

Monthly meetings are usually held at the Juanita E. Thornton/Shepherd Park Library, 7420 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington, DC on the third Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (except July and August and other special event occasions).
CHAPTER PROJECTS include:
Freedmen’s Bureau Indexing Project – Transcribe and/or abstract Civil War Era records for our African-American ancestors.
Partnership with the Washington DC Family History Center and Local AAHGS Chapters to host "ANNUAL REGIONAL AREA GENEALOGY CONFERENCE" featuring a variety of speakers, presenters and workshops on history, research and genetics during February in honor of African American History Month.
Relationship with the African American Civil War Museum to teach, reach out, and/or provide historical/genealogical educational services, lectures and workshops to students throughout the DC Public School System.
